Utilizing statistical data, evidence-based practices, and the Sequential Intercept Model (SIM), this presentation by PRA Senior Project Associate Dan Abreu provides an overview of a framework for assisting justice-involved people with mental and/or substance use disorders with a focus on using courts as a tool for diversion. Due to its delivery in 2014, the presentation does not highlight Intercept 0, as seen in the 2018 revision of the SIM. This presentation is an excellent resource for organizations interested in enhancing opportunities for diversion at Intercept 2 (Initial Detention/Initial Court Hearings), and for communities interested in bringing a SIM Mapping Workshop to their jurisdiction.
This presentation provides a comprehensive picture of how the criminal justice system can negatively impact justice-involved individuals who have unaddressed behavioral health needs. In addressing the disparities, the presentation also suggests strategies that can ensure that justice-involved persons are provided with needed treatment and services. The presentation encourages trauma training for law enforcement officers, so they may recognize the symptoms of traumatic victimization and work with individuals in a manner that promotes safety and de-escalation. Pretrial screening of individuals helps identify individuals with mental and/or substance use disorders to connected or re-connected to treatment services.
